What is the difference between fixed braces and Invisalign®?

Fixed braces are made of metal, attached directly to the teeth, and clearly visible. Invisalign® are plastic aligners that are nearly invisible. Metal brackets and wires can irritate the mouth, while Invisalign® with their smooth surface are perceived as more comfortable. Invisalign® can be removed before eating, which also simplifies tooth cleaning.

From what age is Invisalign® treatment recommended?

In principle, treatment of malocclusions is possible from the age of 6 to 10 with Invisalign®. Treatment is typically recommended for young adolescents, as it requires a certain level of responsibility, discipline, and independence.

Can you have Invisalign® treatment with bridges or crowns?

Crowns typically do not affect Invisalign® treatment. However, bridges can be problematic as they connect multiple teeth. We recommend an individual consultation at one of our Lifedent practices.

Do you need retainers after Invisalign® treatment?

Yes. Retainers are thin wires attached to the inner surfaces of the teeth to maintain the new position and prevent shifting. Alternatively, removable splints can be worn at night.

Are there disadvantages with Invisalign®?

For severe malocclusions, these aligners may not be ideal. A short adjustment period can lead to minor speech difficulties. Treatment success depends on personal wearing discipline. Since the aligners must be removed for eating, teeth should be thoroughly cleaned afterwards.

Q: Does tooth correction with Invisalign® hurt?

Each new set applies gentle pressure to the teeth. You may feel a slight pulling sensation during the first days with a new set. However, our patients do not describe the sensation as painful.

What is Invisalign®?

One of our younger patients put it perfectly: "They are the secret agents of braces." The Invisalign® aligners are clearly different from conventional metal brackets. Firstly, because they are made of metal-free plastic and secondly, because they are removable.

Invisalign® can be used for a wide range of orthodontic problems, for example if your teeth are too crowded, rotated or overlapping.

Using advanced technologies such as 3D scanning, modeling and printing, the Invisalign® aligners are precisely tailored to your individual tooth structure.

Each aligner is precisely matched to the pre-calculated movements of your teeth. Every 1–2 weeks you receive a new set of Invisalign®. This way, continuous pressure is applied to your teeth. This enables gentle but effective tooth correction in 0.15–0.25mm increments.

How does the Invisalign® treatment work at our Lifedent practices in Lucerne, Volketswil, Bülach, Winterthur or Neukirch?

Initial Consultation

In a comprehensive consultation, we discuss your challenges and possibilities. An examination shows whether cavities need to be treated or a professional cleaning should be done beforehand.

Pre-examination and Preparation

3D scans, X-rays, and photos enable individualized treatment planning. Computer simulations show you the expected tooth movement and the final result – from this, the necessary aligners are calculated and manufactured.

Inserting Invisalign®

Attachments are bonded to the teeth as anchor points. The first aligner set is inserted, and you receive instructions on handling and care. You take the remaining sets home and change them every two weeks. The first check-up takes place after 4–6 weeks and lasts 15–30 minutes.

Aftercare

After completing treatment, retainers (thin wires on the inner tooth surfaces) are recommended to prevent teeth from shifting back. Alternatively, removable night-worn splints are available, individually fitted to your needs.

What does Invisalign® therapy cost?

Costs depend on the severity of the malocclusion. The more complex the misalignment, the longer the treatment and the more aligners are needed. After a detailed examination at one of our Lifedent practices, you will receive a precise cost overview.

How does the Invisalign® treatment work at our Lifedent practices in Lucerne, Volketswil, Bülach, Winterthur or Neukirch?

The duration of your Invisalign® treatment depends on how severe your malocclusion is and how quickly your teeth move. If you only have mild misalignments in the front teeth, treatment usually takes about 3 to 5 months. For moderate misalignments, it can take about 7 to 10 months for your teeth to be corrected. More complex misalignments may require up to 18 months to achieve the desired position. It is important to emphasize that every case is individual, therefore the exact treatment duration will be discussed personally with you at the Lifedent practice you visit. During treatment, your progress is carefully monitored to ensure everything is going as planned.
